The MLS New York Red Bulls have sold Miazga to Premier League side Chelsea. Miazga is a 20 year old center back who has who joined the NY Red Bulls on a
homegrown contract in 2013.
Miazga is of Polish descent and while holding a Polish passport, he is a veteran of the US soccer youth squads featuring for the US under 20 Wold Cup Qualifying. Miazga earned his first US Men's National team senior cap against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on November 13, 2015.
This is a big step up for Miazga signing with Chelsea. Not only is this a move to the Premier League, one of the best leagues in the world, but also one of the top clubs in all of the world. One the surface learning from the likes of John Terry cannot hurt his development as a center back. My hopes is that he will get some playing time and really hone in on his craft. He has the raw ability and talent to turn into a great defender. He really shined against some of the MLS's top starts last year.
That being said this does seem to be a step back for Major League Soccer. The MLS had been touting the signing of Stanford prodigy Jordan Morris as a sign the league can retain young talent. The 20 year old, Miazga has mentioned he wanted to move overseas previously so from a NY Red Bull perspective at least they are getting some money in the deal as opposed to Miazga moving at the end of the contract ending 2016 season.
Certainly excited about the USMNT future with Miazga and will miss watching him in the MLS but this is a good move for him personally. Chelsea could use an heir apparent to John Terry as he is nearing retirement one of these years.
What do you see in future for Miazga? Is the Chelsea signing a good move?
